Since 2006, over 1,700 journalists have been killed across the globe, and nearly 90% of their killers walk free, untouched by justice, according to UNESCO.

The situation has never been more critical than in the past year. Since October 2023, more journalists have been killed in Gaza than during the entirety of World War II. Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza has led to the deaths of over 261 journalists in just one year — eclipsing the 69 journalists who lost their lives during WWII. These are not accidents or collateral damage. This is targeted violence — journalists marked with “Press” are attacked, their homes bombed, and their families terrorized.

Press vests no longer offer protection but paint them as targets.

Israel’s systematic assault on journalists is an attempt to obliterate the truth and commit genocide without witness.

These are war crimes, clear violations of international law. Article 79 of international humanitarian law explicitly protects journalists, and yet, they are being hunted down in plain sight. Israel’s ongoing impunity in Gaza not only violates these laws, but also signals a dangerous message to the world: that those who expose the truth can be silenced without consequence.

We cannot afford to stay silent.

This is about more than press freedom—this is about defending truth itself. Every journalist lost is a blow to our collective right to know.

We must act now. We must demand justice for those who have been killed. We must hold those in power accountable for their crimes. We must rally together in a global march, raising our voices to ensure the world does not turn a blind eye to the murder of truth-tellers.

Our strength lies in our unity. The fight for justice and truth demands that we stand together — because if we don’t act now, more will be lost.

This is not just a day of remembrance — it is a day of action.

Here’s how you can help:

Join the Global March: We need a unified global movement to demand justice. Organize or participate in a march in your city on November 2nd. Make your voice heard.

Contact Your Leaders: Write to your government officials and demand they take a stand against the impunity for these war crimes. Silence from leadership is complicity.

Amplify the Truth: Use your platform — whether social media, community events, or discussions — to spread awareness about the killings of journalists, especially in Gaza. Share their stories. Refuse to let their voices be silenced.

Support Press Freedom Organizations: Contribute to organizations fighting for the safety and rights of journalists. They need our resources to continue the fight for truth.
